Barga is on the border of, and Castelnuovo (Pontecosi) is located in the area known as "Garfagnana" - it means 'Great Woodland'". Take a walk on the wild side of Tuscany. Within easy reach of Florence and Siena, but a world away! The valley is bisected by the River Serchio and is guarded by sentinel mountains on either side. It is a land of wild game, the 'fruits' of the forest, especially wild porcini mushrooms, rushing torrents, precariously perched villages and friendly people. Eagles score the wide, wild blue sky above the National Parks of l'Orecchiella and l'Argegna. Roman and medieval remains abound in this (so far) undiscovered area of Tuscany.
A notable feature of the whole area, in which our various properties are located, especially in the months of July and August, is the number of village festivals (festas), including medieval celebrations, whose colourful processions and traditional entertainment, not to mention extremely tasty and inexpensive local food and wine, attract and delight many visitors from home and abroad. These events are advertised locally, usually on bill posters, and details can also be found at the Tourist Offices in Castelnuovo, Barga and Lucca..
The trip down the valley of the River Serchio, from Pontecosi via Castelnuovo and Barga to Lucca, affords views of the often precariously positioned hillside villages, with one of the foremost visual images being the “Devil’s Bridge” at Borgo a Mozzano. This road also provides access to the renowned “Grotta del Vento” (stalagmite and stalactite caves) and to the historical spa town of Bagni di Lucca. The Serchio Valley finally widens and spreads out to the flatter plains area in which Lucca, the capital town of the Province, is situated. From Lucca you can easily reach the inviting vineyards of the Montecarlo area, as well as the towns of Florence and Pisa. If you fancy a dip in the sea the resort of Viareggio is only 25 km from Lucca. Finally, if you wish to venture just a little further afield, the Chianti countryside, as well as the attractive towns of Siena and San Gimignano, are all within a day’s trip.
