The city itself will repay close investigation (churches, towers, squares, Roman amphitheatre, museums, quality shopping of all kinds, and many, many delightful restaurants, bars and cafes). As well as being an attractive centre itself, Lucca is a perfect location for exploring other parts of Tuscany.
There is excellent public transport (bus and train) from Lucca to all major excursion spots and we can also recommend car hire facilities. If you want a "dip" in the sea, the fashionable and attractive resorts of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi are only about 30 mins away.

Pisa
is only 20 mins away, Florence can be reached in about an hour and Siena
is 90 mins. away. The National Park areas of the Garfagnana in Northern
Tuscany (mountains to 6000 feet!) are also well worth exploring and
only an hour or so away.
