More
a hamlet than a town, the lakeside village of Pontecosi (photo right)
is in the heart of the Garfagnana area with its fabulous mountain scenery
and traditional northern Tuscan villages.
Pontecosi old village, with its churches and traditional
houses, is situated by the lakeside, while we are in the relatively
new part of the village. Our house is circled in the image.
The lake is only a few minutes walk from the house and its lakeside café/bar
also doubles as the village shop. Apart from basic groceries, bread and
wine etc. it also offers a nice selection of ice creams and you can sit
outside and enjoy a small but tasty selection of hot and cold snacks at
very reasonable prices. The
lake is a haven for wild birds and is also a good fishing venue. The
increasingly popular summer festival in mid August is focused on the
lakeside and last year attracted many visitors.
There is a traditional Italian bowling (bocce) alley and a little children’s
play park on the landscaped garden area.
Restaurants, shops and supermarkets are only a few minutes drive away.
A (P.G.A. affiliated) 6 hole golf course (3X6=18!) is located only
5 minutes away from Pontecosi. Horse riding, mountain biking and hill
walking as well as fishing in the river Serchio are also amongst the
attractions of the area.

Pontecosi is also less than 10 minutes drive from Castelnuovo, the
bustling capital town of the Garfagnana area. The old town entrance
is guarded by the fortress-like
“la Rocca” which dates back to medieval times. Sit in the
piazza and sip your drink as you watch and listen to the “buzz”
of Italy. The town is much visited, but not spoiled, and its vibrant
and vociferous Thursday morning market is a “must”.
Castelnuovo
has a good variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. It also has
a couple of Tourist Information Offices, an outdoor and indoor swimming
pool, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and a ten-pin bowling alley (the
bowling alley is situated in the outskirts of the town on the road to
Pontecosi). Castelnuovo is increasingly a venue for musical events,
and the annual beer festival attracts thousands. From Castelnuovo you
can take the train up or down the Serchio river valley.
