The town of Lucca first became a colony of ancient Rome in 180 BC and is steeped in character. Its cobbled streets, squares and graceful old buildings and churches are seductive. You can cycle around the top of the ancient fortified walls (built in 1504 to 1645), or picnic in the shade of an old tree on the top of those walls, with the countryside on one hand and the beautifully preserved old gardens of the great villas of the town on the other.

From Lucca, and within approximately one and a half hours radius, you can reach such giants of Renaissance Tuscany as Florence, San Gimignano and Siena and can strike into the glorious rolling hills of Central and Southern Tuscany.

The fashionable Mediterranean resort of Viareggio, with its beautiful, safe beaches of fine sand, its stylish boutiques, restaurants, cafes and daily market, is 30 minutes from Lucca. From Castelnuovo, as well as going via Lucca, you can also access Viareggio by going over the spectacular "Alpi Apuane" mountains and past the marble quarries around Carrara where Michaelangelo sourced his marble. (Can you imagine a cube of perfect marble the size of an apartment building?)
